Responses of Algae and Bacteria to Nutrient Additions in Bottled Lake Water
نویسندگان
چکیده
Surface water of Lake Yunoko, a small eutrophic lake in central Japan, was bottled, enriched with glucose and/or mineral nutrients, and incubated for five days in the surface layer of that lake. Bacteria reacted promptly to the addition of glucose. When, however, an ample amount of glucose was added to the lake water, certain mineral nutrients, possibly nitrogen, became secondarily limiting to the growth of bacteria. Although mineral nutrients alone stimulated the growth of algae, the stimulatory effect was far greater when both glucose and mineral nutrients were enriched.

Evaluation and Isolation of Halophilic Bacteria from the Meyghan Lake in Arak, Iran
ABSTRACT Background and Objectives: Halophilic bacteria can grow and survive in environments with a wide range a wide range of salinities. In this study, we aimed to isolate halophilic bacteria from the Meyghan Lake in Arak (Iran) and evaluate their enzymatic activity. Methods: Samples were taken from four different areas of the lake. Halophilic bacteria were isolated by...
متن کاملInvasive dreissenid mussels and benthic algae in Lake Michigan: characterizing effects on sediment bacterial communities.
Dreissenid mussels have invaded the Laurentian Great Lakes causing dramatic changes to benthic-pelagic interactions. Despite research on food web impacts, there is limited data on mussel effects on benthic bacterial communities. This study examined effects of dreissenid mussels and benthic algae on sediment bacterial community composition and diversity. Triplicate experimental sediment plus lak...
متن کاملRadiotracer study of phosphorus uptake by plankton and redistribution in I&he water column of a small humic lake
The movement of P in the plankton of a humic lake was studied in late July within a 2-m-diameter tube. The tube enclosed water from the surface to below the epilimnion with the steep vertical stratification of the lake undisturbed. [“2P]orthophosphate was mixed into the epilimnion of the enclosure and its fate followed for 2 weeks. In the epilimnion -85% of all the P in organisms was in Daphnia...
متن کاملHigh-temperature thermoluminescence of chlorophyll as a method to study lipid peroxidation in planktonic algae
Chlorophyll-containing cells of algae, photosynthetic bacteria, and plants often exhibit strong red luminescence when heated to temperatures above 70 °C. This high-temperature thermoluminescence (HTL) originates mostly from thermally induced degradation of lipid cycloperoxides present in thylakoid membranes. The degrading cycloperoxides can transiently form carbonyl species in excited triplet s...
متن کاملExperimental tests of nutrient limitation in freshwater picoplankton.
On the basis of correlative studies, picoplankton in Calder Lake, New York, are apparently unaffected by seasonal fluxes in nutrient (N and P) levels. In this small eutrophic lake, picoplankton (<2.0- to 0.2-mum size) and nanoplankton (<20 to >2 mum) predominate. Microplankton (>20 mum) are typically least important. Experiments were conducted in situ to test whether N, P or N/P ratios affect t...
